Funeral Song List.

  • Amazing Grace

Easily the most well-known & popular song on the bagpipe. The song was not originally written for the bagpipe but it works out wonderfully. This song has a way of bringing tears to the eyes of most listeners. In a funeral service, Amazing Grace works best as the closing tune but can absolutely be played at various parts of the ceremony especially if a more upbeat tune is requested for the ending.

  • The Fields Of Athenry

The most famous Irish ballad of our time written in 1979 by Peter St. John, the song is played at the start of Irish sporting events to this day. Taking place during the Great Famine of the 1840’s and bears rich lyrics of love, commitment to family, sacrifice, defiance against tyranny and its consequences. This is Wheaton’s favorite song to play on the bagpipe.

  • Scotland The Brave

This is maybe the second most requested song on the bagpipe after Amazing Grace. Really fun tune that works out well at the end of a funeral service when the family wants to experience a fun tune to celebrate their loved one’s life.

  • Danny Boy

A famous representation of Irish culture, Danny Boy is a legendary song with an ancient Irish melody. It was written in 1910 by songwriter Frederic Weatherly. This Irish ballad works out wonderfully on the bagpipes. Danny Boy was played at the following famous funerals : Princess Diana, JFK, & Elvis Presley. Elvis once said the song was “written by angels”.

  • Ode To Joy - (Beethoven No.9)

This is a fantastic celebratory song that can be placed at the start or end of a funeral ceremony when the sadness of the event is exhausted and the vision of eternal joy is embraced.
